Multi-factor authentication means a password on its own will not get anyone into your account. It is the single most useful thing you can switch on, and it takes a few minutes.
Step by step
- Open your security settings. On a computer, go to aka.ms/mfasetup and sign in with your work account.
- Add a method. Choose Add sign-in method and pick Microsoft Authenticator. It is faster and safer than a text message.
- Install the app on your phone. Install Microsoft Authenticator from the App Store or Google Play and open it.
- Scan the code. Back on the computer, follow the prompts until a QR code appears, then scan it with the Authenticator app.
- Approve the test. The computer shows a number. Type it into the app when prompted to confirm the link works.
- Add a backup method. Add your mobile number as a second method, so a lost or flat phone does not lock you out.
If it does not go to plan
- You get prompts you did not ask for: do not approve them. Someone has your password. Change it and tell us straight away.
- New phone: set up the Authenticator app on the new phone before wiping the old one, or contact us to reset it.
